Most people have a general sense of what the sex offender registry is, and how serious this registration can be. Many clients come into my office with common questions, and I felt it would be helpful to have some information readily available on this website. Who must register?
If you are convicted of a sexual offense in court, you must register. The length of time and the category of registration depend on the crime, the age of the victim and when the offense was committed. Maryland recognizes four categories of sex offenders: child sex offenders, sexually violent offenders, offenders and sexually violent predators.
When do you have to register?
For Maryland residents, registration needs to be within five days of release and recurring every six months. Sexually violent predators must register every 90 days in person with the designated law enforcement office.
What are the registration terms?
Depending on the crime of conviction, the age of the victim and when the offense was committed, the registration can be 10 years or lifetime.
How can I be removed from the sex offender registry?
Typically, there are three ways to be removed from the registry: death, expiration of registration term, and expungement or overturned conviction. If you wish to relocate out of state, you will be removed from Maryland’s registry and the central registry of the new state will be notified.
What if I don’t register?
An offender who does not register is subject to up to three years imprisonment and/or up to $5,000.
