Maryland man charged with hitting state trooper vehicle while DUI

One of the worst possible scenarios when driving under the influence, short of killing yourself or someone else, is probably hitting a law enforcement vehicle and injuring the officer inside. According to Maryland authorities, that’s what happened on the evening of June 19.

An Annapolis man is charged with being under the influence when his vehicle struck an SUV belonging to the Maryland State Police. The state trooper who was driving the vehicle was injured in the crash.

The man, who was driving a Honda Element, reportedly was transitioning from southbound Route 665 to Riva Road, going eastbound, via a ramp. Authorities say that he moved out of his lane and hit the trooper’s SUV on the front passenger side.

The trooper, who works in the Annapolis Barrack, was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. He has since been released.

Meanwhile, the other driver, who was not injured, was arrested at the scene. He is facing charges including reckless and negligent driving and DUI. He was transported to the Glen Burnie Barrack.

No DUI charge should be taken lightly. However, if it involves a crash with a law enforcement vehicle, you can be assured that officers and prosecutors will be vigilant about ensuring that the alleged drunk driver is brought to justice. Further, as in this case, there are often additional charges that accompany a DUI charge, particularly if someone is injured or killed.

A Maryland attorney who is experienced with DUI cases can work to make sure that the evidence against you was obtained legally and using the proper procedures. He or she will also work to protect your rights and present your case as you move through the justice system.
