Man jailed for failing to go through sex offender registration

If you've previously been convicted of a sex crime, you may have to register as a sex offender. If that's the case, then it's important that you do so within the legal time frame each and every time you move. If you do not, you could be jailed for failing to register.

A Maryland man has been jailed due to his failure to register as a sex offender. The 46-year-old man is being held at the Harford County Detention Center. His bail has been set at $50,000. He is accused of failing to notify authorities of his change of address and change of employer. He also allegedly failed to register as a Tier III sexual offender despite being charged with a sex crime and convicted of that crime.

The man was convicted of a charge of criminal attempt-involuntary deviate sexual intercourse in 2005. Because of that charge, he was required to register as a convicted sex offender in Maryland. He previously served jail time in Pennsylvania and received 10 years of supervised release that was meant to be used in Maryland.

The man did register with the Harford County Sheriff's Office in November 2013. Somehow, though, he failed to re-register in February. As a Tier III offender, he is required to re-register every three months. When he didn't re-register, that meant that his new address and employer weren't on file, and police had to locate him via a warrant. He was arrested on May 22.

It is essential that those convicted of sexual offenses adhere to all conditions of their probation after serving time and to all other restrictions placed on them. Maryland defense attorneys can help advise people regarding adherence to these mandates so that they do not risk further incarceration or penalties.
