According to Maryland State Police, a Carroll County man has been taken into custody on child pornography charges. The defendant was taken into custody on March 11 following an investigation that spanned several months into a file-sharing network that allegedly exchanged child pornography. The computer activity was traced to the defendant's residence in Westminster by an investigator with the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
A lot of publicity is often given to teachers who are charged with possession of child pornography. Both state and federal prosecutors aggressively pursue such cases. If convicted, penalties can be harsh. In addition to time in prison, defendants may lose their jobs and must register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.
Being accused of possession and distribution of child pornography is serious and can have life-changing consequences. The charges generally come after a search of a person’s home, where investigators seize a computer and allegedly find downloaded pornographic images.
Possession of child pornography is a serious charge, and being indicted on a related charge can be life-altering. However, an indictment is only a finding of probable cause and the government must present a much higher level of evidence to obtain a conviction.
