Keep Your BAC In Check During The Baltimore Craft Beer Festival

On Behalf of | Oct 19, 2015 | Drunk Driving

The seasons are changing, and Oktoberfest and Halloween are upon us. It’s also the time of year when many craft beer celebrations are held in Baltimore and throughout the state – this Saturday is the annual Baltimore Craft Beer Festival.

While it’s the perfect time of year to try out to one of Maryland’s many craft breweries, it’s also important to remember that law enforcement professionals know when and where these celebrations are taking place and are increasing DUI patrol.

When celebrating everything beer, it can be easy to get carried away and consume more than you realize. Many people get behind the wheel truly believing they are ok to drive, only to get pulled over and find they are over the legal limit.

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind while celebrating this fall:

  • Your age – You have to be 21 to legally drink in Maryland and the older you are, the less quickly you metabolize alcohol.
  • Your gender – Men can generally consume more alcohol than women.
  • How many drinks you’ve had per hour — The general guideline is one alcoholic beverage per hour for women, one drink every 45 minutes for men.
  • Your weight – The more fat you have, the slower your alcohol absorption, resulting in more alcohol in your blood (a higher BAC).
  • Any medications you are on – Prescription medications and over-the-counter products – such as allergy medicines – can interact with alcohol making you feel more impaired.
  • The strength of the beer you are drinking – All beers are not created equal. Many craft brews contain much higher alcohol content.
  • The amount of food you’ve consumed – Drinking on a full stomach will help slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream.

Don’t be one of the unlucky ones arrested for drunk driving – and if you are, make sure you contact a DUI lawyer immediately.

Cheers to a fun – and safe – fall!
