Local teacher faces rape, other sex offense charges

On Behalf of | Nov 24, 2015 | Sexual Assault

Baltimore readers recently learned that a teacher employed by the Baltimore Public School system has been hit with various criminal charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a student who sought extra help with her school work. The teacher, who was charged earlier this month, has been charged with second-degree rape, sexual abuse of a minor, and other related charges.

Authorities found out about the incident from an area hospital where the student was examined. She was later interviewed about the incident and claimed that the teacher gave her alcohol and then assaulted her in his home while she was intoxicated. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave.

Obviously, criminal cases such as this one are difficult and create strong reactions because of the nature of the charges. It is important to remember, though, that everybody who is charged with a criminal offense has the right to defend him- or herself. Taking advantage of the protections available in the criminal process is critical for those facing charges for alleged sex offenses.

Building a strong criminal defense case against sex offense charges is not necessarily a matter of denying that any wrongdoing took place. The way a defense case is build depends on various factors, including the specific details of the allegations and the requirements for successfully proving the criminal charges, as well as the technical and procedural elements of the case.

One particularly important aspect of criminal defense work is to ensure that prosecutors do their job in providing relevant, reliable and otherwise acceptable evidence which demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty of the alleged offense or offenses.

In our next post, we’ll continue this discussion and take a look at some of the differences between the various registrable sex crimes here in Maryland with an eye toward the issue of evidence.
