Maryland officer charged with DUI after road rage incident

A Maryland sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave following an incident in January where he is alleged to have been driving under the influence. The man was reportedly the victim of road rage by a man who shot at him in Parsonburg.

According to the Maryland State Police, the off-duty deputy was driving his pick-up truck when he and another driver nearly hit each other. The other driver, a 23-year-old Delaware man, allegedly shot twice at the deputy. A state trooper who responded to the incident charged the deputy with misdemeanor DUI.

The officer at this point is still at work, but is confined to desk duty. He’s not allowed to use department vehicles or make arrests. Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said, “As law enforcement officers, we hold ourselves at a higher standard than the general public, so we take this very seriously.” He could potentially face termination.

The case will be handled by a special prosecutor. The officer is not expected to have to appear in court before May. The man who shot at him has already been indicted on multiple charges. The officer’s attorney has said he believes that the evidence will show that his client was not under the influence at the time of the incident.

Road rage incidents that involve firearms are becoming increasingly common on our highways. If you are the victim of a road rage incident and if you are accused of being under the influence while behind the wheel, you may still suffer legal repercussions and potentially find your job at risk.
