Maryland man faces fourth set of drunk driving charges since 2007

A Maryland man arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) last month has a record of drunk driving arrests and convictions going back more than a decade.

For his first DWI conviction in 2007, he received a 90-day jail sentence. His second arrest came in 2015 after he was involved in a crash in Mechanicsville. According to law enforcement, after running several vehicles off the road on Route 235, the man became trapped in his vehicle after it flipped over. He had to be extricated by the local fire department and airlifted to a trauma center. The officer who responded to the crash said he told her that he was drunk. He had a blood alcohol level of nearly .29, and cocaine and Xanax were found in his system. He was sentenced to a year in jail, but all but 10 days of that sentence was suspended.

The man was again arrested this April in Leonardtown. He agreed to field sobriety tests and also a Breathalyzer, which showed a .32 blood alcohol content despite the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) alcohol restriction on his license.

He was still awaiting his September court date for that arrest when he was involved in another crash on July 19. According to authorities, the man also punched the officer who responded to the call. The driver’s injuries reportedly warranted another flight to a trauma center. It wasn’t reported where this latest incident took place. Although he wasn’t charged with assault, he was arrested for DWI and other related charges.

While there are multiple laws in place to keep drunk drivers off the road in Maryland, if someone has a serious problem with alcohol and drugs and can get access to a vehicle, they can continue to endanger themselves and others. Sometimes, the best way to deal with a person’s repeated substance abuse-related arrests is to require them to get the treatment they need. Experienced Maryland attorneys can seek that option if you or a loved one is facing these charges. It may be the best solution for everyone.
