Despite all the warnings, DUIs increase on Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday isn’t an official holiday. However, for many Americans, it feels like one — particularly if “your” team is playing. Even people who barely know the rules of football often find themselves at parties and in bars on Super Bowl Sunday just for the fun, camaraderie, food, and of course, the drinks.

It’s no wonder that DUI rates spike on Super Bowl Sunday. One study of over 530,000 people who had previous DUI convictions found that subsequent arrests were 22 percent higher on this day than on the average Sunday. This was despite the fact that they had been ordered to wear alcohol monitoring bracelets.

That study also found that the cities and surrounding areas whose teams were playing in the big game were more likely to have drunk drivers on the road. That may be some solace to Baltimore Ravens fans who won’t be seeing their team in Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3. Interestingly, DUI arrests were 75 percent higher among fans of the winning team than the losing team.

Law enforcement officers will be out in force in just about all major cities on Feb. 3 (and likely throughout the weekend) to watch for drunk drivers. However, football fans have a lot of options these days for getting home safely from their Super Bowl celebration and avoiding a DUI. There will likely be a lot of Uber and Lyft drivers on the roads hoping to earn some extra money. Therefore, there’s no reason to take your car out, even if you have no intention of not drinking.

If you are arrested for DUI, it’s essential not to underestimate the potential consequences to your life. You could end up paying for a DUI in a multitude of ways for a long time. If you haven’t turned 21 yet, you might face additional penalties for underage drinking. An experienced attorney can work to protect your rights and help you as you proceed through the justice system.
