When Homecoming Gets Out Of Hand

Homecoming is a time to cut loose, cheer on your school's football team and show your school pride at campus events and private parties. No one thinks it will end with criminal charges and possible expulsion from college. Unfortunately for some college students, that is the harsh reality.

When alcohol and drugs are involved - as they typically are during college homecoming celebrations - judgment becomes impaired. It is easy for a "no" to be interpreted as a "yes."

Most colleges and universities have honor codes. Any behavior that results in sexual assault, rape or other criminal sex charges is a violation of that honor code.

If you - or your son - have been charged with sexual assault or rape, don't be surprised if you find yourself facing both criminal charges and school disciplinary proceedings.

Preparing For College Honor Board Hearings

One lapse in judgment shouldn't ruin your life, but that is often what happens. If you are found guilty at a college disciplinary hearing you will have a permanent mark on your academic record and may even be expelled.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare for and protect yourself at disciplinary hearings:

  • Know your college's student honor code
  • Prepare a statement
  • Bring witnesses who can testify on your behalf
  • Introduce evidence of your innocence
  • Contact a lawyer who specializes in college honor board hearing defense

Everyone takes criminal charges seriously, but few realize the major impact college discipline proceedings can have on your future. Before attending an honor board hearing, make sure you are prepared.
