On Behalf of | Mar 1, 2019 | Drunk Driving, Drunk Driving Charges

While many people dread the snow, others cannot wait to get outside and begin their long-awaited winter activities. You may be one of many who are ready to get away from the city and head out on their sleds for some snowmobiling fun.

Amidst all of the fun of going off-road, it is still important to keep safety in mind and avoid getting a DUI charge at all costs.

Maryland’s DUI laws apply to all vehicles, even to off-road machines like snowmobiles. Keep in mind that you may face harsh penalties if you end up with a DUI conviction. First-time offenders could spend up to one year in jail and pay up to $1,000 in fines. The charges are heavier for repeat offenders.

If a DUI leads to an accident, you could face heavy sanctions for any injuries caused. Any “Serious Bodily Injury” caused may lead to a maximum of two years of jail time, and fines of up to $3,000. Causing “Vehicular Homicide” can invoke much harsher penalties with the possibility of spending up to five years in jail and paying up to $5,000 in fines.

Protect your driving privileges this winter

Remember that going off-road does not rid you of drunk driving laws. it is important to monitor your alcohol consumption throughout a day of snowmobiling. Whenever you take breaks, consider ordering a cup of hot chocolate or tea, postponing any alcoholic drinks until the end of the day. This will allow you to head right back out on the trails without having to worry about being impaired.
